One of our main activities is to refurbish air flow meters (AFM) used for the boxer engines in Volkswagen T3 vans.

With each year of driving, the carbon-based strips inside the air flow meter are wearing out, causing a false reading and rough running of the engine, loss of power, stalling, etc. Replacement air flow meters are not available. However, we have developed a  solution that replaces the internals with digital, contact-less electronics that should never wear out.

Wear on air flow meter

This is the typical look of the carbon strips inside a worn out air flow meter. There’s hardly any carbon left so there’s bad electrical connection.

We have successfully refurbished air flow meters for 1.9 and 2.1/2.5 liter boxer motors (part numbers 0-280-202-079/025-906-301-C and 0-280-200-038) but in theory we can refurbish any AFM as long as it has the same form factor.

Refurbishment also eliminates the need of the (in)famous Vanagon plug!

How does it work?

In case you have a supported AFM (check the product page for details), you order and pay for the refurbishment. You then send your old meter to us. Upon arrival we will check the unit and if it is usable, send one from our stock. We will then clean the unit, sandblast it, and replace the carbon strip with our electronics and put it back in our stock.

In theory it should be plug and play but you may have to adjust it slightly. Or better still, let your dealer do it as it requires a CO/NOx exhaust meter for optimal adjustment.

Can I buy a refurbished AFM?

No. We currently don’t have any AFMs for sale. Should you however have an old, spare air flow meter, then contact us.
